Day 3

Saturday, May 9, 2020 Morning

0500 EDT. Scranton, PA.

After six hours of sleep, most of the agents were back at their stations doing what they could to try to pinpoint Hildebrandt’s location. Even if they couldn’t find the kidnappers, they thought, perhaps they could find Dr. Hildebrandt before the time was up.

Agent Piton gathered Dyers, Towers, Nick, Paul, and Kaylee in an adjacent boardroom to debrief them on what had happened after they had all gone to rest yesterday.

“We received word late last night that the search of Green Biochemical Technology didn’t yield any results. Even if Dr. Green was involved, it’s doubtful that he would mix any illegal activities with his legitimate ventures.”

“So, what can we do now?” Nick asked.

“Nothing. We are still searching through Dr. Green’s holdings, but at this point there is nothing further we can do.” With a sigh and a glance at Kaylee, he continued, “Right now, it’s the kidnappers’ move. And the government doesn’t bargain with terrorists.”

“The government doesn’t ‘bargain with terrorists?’” Kaylee stuttered, dreading the answer.

“No, we don’t. At this moment, and until we have concrete evidence or a specific location, our hands are tied.”

“You’re just going to leave him there? The man only gave you twenty-four hours. What happens when you don’t give him what he wants? Am I going to lose my Dad, too, because you just won’t give the kidnappers what they want?” Kaylee yelled, leaping to her feet.

Paul tried to get her to sit back down and calm down, but Kaylee had had enough. She stormed to the window and glowered out at the view. The rest of the men looked grimly at each other, not knowing what to do.

“There’s nothing else we can do?” Towers asked again, hoping against hope that the answer would be different.

Agent Piton just shook his head no in response.

Dyer, meanwhile, had moved to the window next to Kaylee. He could not really see anything. It was still dark outside, but a trick of the eye made him think that he saw a man across the parking lot, standing under a streetlight. The way he stood, with his arms crossed and his head cocked to one side, reminded him of someone. But who? Shaking his head, he looked again, and the man—or the figment of his imagination—had disappeared. Then, in a flash, he remembered. How could he have forgotten?

“He could help!” he blurted out.

This announcement was met with silence. Then, like the sounds of a dam breaking, came shouts of ‘What?’ and ‘Who?’ from everyone else in the room.

Turning around, he found that Agent Piton had stood up, and the rest of the people in the room were looking at him almost desperately.

“There’s a man I know. I used to work for him before I finished college. He has a rather unique set of skills, and access to more information than we do.”

“Would this be a legit, or an under the table, type of thing?” Agent Piton asked, almost afraid to know. He didn’t want to have to choose between rescuing Dr.
